Observations in Taiwan

Observation #1: There is virtually no carrying on of conversation when you walk into the streets or even when people are eating. Couples eat together, sitting face-to-face, in silence. An outside observer would think that this couple was having an argument but if you observe long enough, they have moments of movie-like sentiment.

Observation #2: People are picky about what others around them do (if they are doing the right thing and if they are doing it right). They care a lot about decorum, yet when you walk into a woman's restroom into one of the stalls, the toilet seat is covered with urine!

Observation #3: Guys hold their girlfriend's purses and hold their umbrella over their heads as well. On Chinese Valentine's Day, there are guys holding purses and shoppings bags, walking behind their girlfriends'...then he pays for her, while the girl stands by looking proud and haughty.

Observation #4: All girls in Taiwan want to be little princesses...or at least the majority. Tell a girl she looks ten years younger than she really is and she bursts with laughter and glee that even she can't control. You have just made her day.

Observation #5: When I wear flip flops, people look down and stare at you. They asked Jennifer if she lived nearby, if she had just come out of her place for a visit to Xi Men Ding.
